Caregiver Core Training (CCT)
Caregiver Core Training (CCT) is a mandatory foundational training series developed by The Alliance for non-kin caregivers seeking licensure in Washington State. While mandatory for non-kin providers, kin caregivers are encouraged to complete the series to gain essential skills for supporting youth in their care. This 12-hour beginner-level program is fully online and self-paced, integrating the authentic voices of former foster youth, current caregivers, and parents who have experienced the child welfare system.
Learning Objectives by Session
The training is structured into six interactive eLearning sessions, each designed to build specific competencies:
- Session 1: Introduction to the Child Welfare System and Licensing Understand the distinct roles and expectations of a licensed caregiver. Participants are introduced to the legal frameworks of the child welfare system and the step-by-step requirements of the Washington State licensing process.
- Session 2: Collaborative Caregiving Explore the mission of the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) to preserve families. This session focuses on collaborative efforts toward reunification and other permanency pathways, emphasizing the caregiver’s role as a partner to birth families.
- Session 3: Cultural Connections, Identity, and Advocacy Learn practical strategies to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing home environment. This module teaches caregivers how to actively affirm the unique identities and cultural heritage of the children in their care.
- Session 4: Trauma-Informed Caregiving Gain a deep understanding of how trauma impacts a child’s development. Participants will learn evidence-based strategies to increase a youth’s sense of “felt safety” and emotional well-being.
- Session 5: Understanding Emotions and Behavior Analyze the roots of challenging behaviors through a developmental lens. Caregivers will explore methods to teach self-regulation and positive life skills, fostering healthy relationships and resilience.
- Session 6: Getting Ready and the Effects on the Family Prepare for the practical changes a new placement brings to the household. This session covers the placement screening process and provides guidance on gathering critical information to determine the right “fit” for your family.
