Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) 101
Presented by Nathan LaChine, this foundational training offers a comprehensive overview of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC). Designed for child welfare professionals, mandated reporters, and caregivers, this session deconstructs common myths while providing a robust framework for identifying and supporting vulnerable youth.
Participants will explore CSEC as a form of child abuse and a global criminal enterprise, while gaining specific insights into the patterns of exploitation occurring within Washington State and King County.
Learning Objectives
Through a combination of statistical analysis, legal definitions, and survivor-centered perspectives, participants will be able to:
- Define the Full Scope of Trafficking: Understand the critical intersection between sex and labor trafficking and recognize CSEC as a form of violence against children.
- Deconstruct Societal Myths: Challenge harmful stereotypes regarding “choice,” gender (including the often-overlooked victimization of boys), and the “glamour” of the industry.
- Analyze Vulnerability and Disproportionality: Examine why marginalized populations—including LGBTQIA+ youth, Native youth, and African American youth—face significantly higher risks of exploitation.
- Master Identification and Red Flags: Learn to recognize behavioral and environmental indicators of exploitation, such as unexplained belongings, frequent AWOLs, and specific patterns of internet-based recruitment.
- Understand the “Machine” of Demand: Gain insight into the economics of a $244 billion global industry and the profiles and motivations of those who buy and exploit children.
- Apply Trauma-Informed Approaches: Identify the diverse needs of survivors (spiritual, emotional, and physical) and learn how to foster resiliency through supportive relationships and evidence-based care.

This session examines current data regarding systemic vulnerabilities and the evolving digital landscape of human trafficking. Attendees will explore how modern predators weaponize online tools to target vulnerable youth and fast-track the cycle of commercial sexual exploitation.

- The Rise of Digital Coercion: Explores how predators leverage online sextortion as a high-velocity recruitment method, using the threat of leaked photos to blackmail youth into compliance and trap them in ongoing exploitation.
- The Child Welfare Connection: Reviews critical data showing that between 50% and 90% of child exploitation survivors in the U.S. have a history within the child welfare system.
Pathways of Entry
Participants will walk through real-world scenarios illustrating diverse pathways into “the life,” including:
- Survival Sex: Trading sexual acts for basic needs like food, shelter, and affirmation.
- Peer Recruitment: The role of social networks and apps in establishing initial contact.
- Familial and Gang-Based Exploitation: The complex dynamics of trauma bonding and coercion within existing relationships.
A Call to Advocacy and Self-Care
The training concludes with actionable “Now What?” steps, including legislative awareness and volunteer opportunities. Recognizing the weight of this subject matter, a central theme throughout the session is the essential practice of intentional self-care for those working with traumatized youth.
