Fault Lines: A Rare Collaboration Between Keith Haring and Brion Gysin

Exploring Art, Identity, and Creative Expression

Published in 1986, Fault Lines is a limited-edition artist’s book that brought together the visionary artwork of Keith Haring and the experimental writings of Brion Gysin. The book features Gysin’s literary work paired with more than 50 illustrations created by Haring, resulting in a powerful collaboration that reflects themes of identity, sexuality, freedom, and self-expression.

Created during a period when Haring was becoming one of the most recognizable artists of the 1980s, Fault Lines showcases a side of his work that was often less visible to mainstream audiences. The publication was initially difficult to place with publishers because of its mature content and explicit exploration of sexuality. Ultimately, it was released as a limited edition of only 200 copies by Edition Schellmann in Munich and New York.

Keith Haring’s Legacy

Keith Haring believed that art should be accessible to everyone. His bold lines, vibrant imagery, and public murals addressed issues such as social justice, equality, HIV/AIDS awareness, and human rights. His work continues to inspire conversations about acceptance, diversity, and the power of creative expression.

While Fault Lines is not a children’s book and contains adult themes, it remains an important example of LGBTQ+ artistic history and the ways artists have used creative works to challenge societal norms and advocate for visibility and inclusion.
