Screening Applicants for Effectiveness (SAFE)

Certified SAFE Training consists of content that is designed to assist youth mentoring and youth serving programs in strengthening their assessment and monitoring practices to screen out potential child sexual abusers. Screening volunteers is an intrusive yet necessary step for any program that allows adults to have contact with youth.

When recommended tools and processes are followed, youth-serving programs demonstrate a profound commitment to the safety of those in their care, enabling positive and effective mentoring relationships. Done poorly, however, organizations leave themselves exposed to significant risks, both to the youth they serve and to the institution’s professional reputation and credibility.

In the absence of mandated national standards, this training provides evidence-based recommendations designed to minimize the risk of harm. While no process can completely guarantee the removal of all risk, the SAFE framework offers a standardized path to maximizing protection.
