Talk Saves Lives – An Introduction to Suicide Prevention
Talk Saves Lives is a community-based presentation developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) that provides a concise overview of suicide and the actionable steps individuals can take to prevent it. Suicide is a leading cause of death that impacts everyone, but it is preventable when we understand the factors involved and how to intervene effectively. This introductory training provides participants with a common language and a research-based framework for identifying those at risk and connecting them to life-saving support.
Learning Objectives
Through this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the Scope of Suicide: Analyze current research on the prevalence of suicide and move beyond common misconceptions to recognize it as a significant public health issue.
- Identify Complex Risk Factors: Learn to categorize the factors that increase suicide risk into three primary areas: Health Factors (mental health conditions and chronic pain), Environmental Factors (access to lethal means and prolonged stress), and Historical Factors (previous attempts or family history).
- Recognize Early Warning Signs: Gain the skills to spot critical changes in someone’s Talk (being a burden, feeling trapped), Behavior (withdrawing, increased substance use), and Mood (depression, irritability, or sudden relief).
- Implement Practical Intervention Steps: Master the “Reach Out” process, including how to ask directly about suicide, listen without judgment, and safely connect a person in crisis to professional help.
- Promote Mental Health Culture: Explore how to foster protective environments and support “postvention” efforts for loss survivors to strengthen community resilience.
The Science of Prevention
The training emphasizes that suicide is complex and never has a single cause. Participants will explore how a combination of internal vulnerabilities and external stressors can lead to a state of despair, and why limiting access to lethal means is one of the most effective ways to save lives.
Taking Action
Attendees will learn step-by-step guidance on what to do when they are concerned about someone. This includes staying with the person, removing lethal means, and escorting them to an emergency room or calling a crisis line.
