Reflection

Reflection was inspired by my lifelong fascination with the imagery of clowns, which began after watching Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable portrayal of the Joker. Rather than creating a traditional portrait, I wanted to build a layered collage that felt like weathered street art something you might discover on the side of an old city building after years of paint, posters, graffiti, and memories accumulating over time. The artwork is intentionally chaotic. Faces, symbols, text, and found imagery overlap and compete for attention, yet together they create a larger narrative. I enjoy creating compositions that reward careful observation, allowing viewers to discover new details each time they return to the piece.

While creating Reflection, I was navigating a period of personal sadness and significant change. Those emotions naturally became part of the work. The Joker represents both humor and pain—the mask we sometimes wear while struggling internally. Above him, the word “CHANGE” acknowledges that transformation, whether welcome or difficult, is an unavoidable part of life.

The phrase “Remember the Good Times” became the emotional heart of the painting. It served as a reminder to myself that even in moments of darkness, choosing to focus on positive memories can shift our perspective and create space for hope. That simple act of reflection became an important tool in my own healing.

Although Reflection explores themes of chaos, loss, and uncertainty, it is ultimately a work about resilience. It invites viewers to look beyond the surface, embrace complexity, and recognize that even the most fragmented experiences can come together to tell a meaningful story.
